The Palatinate Chestnut Bloom Days: 11th - 21st of June 2009

The Romans brought them to the Palatinate - together with the
wine: the European chestnuts. Obviously, they felt comfortable
in the mild climate of the Palatinate, and stayed here at the hillsides of the Haardt mountain along the Southern Wine Route.

In the middle of June, the chestnuts bloom in shiny yellow colours and spread their harsh odor. This is a good reason to celebrate the Chestnut Bloom Day with its multifaceted programme in the Southern Wine Route from 11th - 21st of June. You can hike and take a rest, enjoy and listen, celebrate and, at the same time, acquire expert knowledge about the chestnut and how it is produced.

Highlight of the Chestnut Bloom Days is the feast "Keschdeblütefeschd" with a market, live music, animation programme for children, information booth and delicious chestnut dishes. The feast is on Sunday the 21st of June at 11 a.m. at the peace monument in Edenkoben in the middle of the chestnut forest.

Attracting chestnut bloom packages are bookable for everyone who wants to discover this nature phenomenon on a day-trip or with accommodation. All guided hiking tours are free of charge; you just have to register, at the latest, one day before the tour at the responsible tourism office.

You can ask for a prospectus with the whole programme of the Palatinate Chestnut Bloom Days for free at the tourism office Suedliche Weinstrasse e.V., phone: 06341/940407, www.suedlicheweinstrasse.de, or at the tourism office in Annweiler (06346/2200), Edenkoben (06323/959222), Landau-Land (06345/3531), Maikammer (06321/952768) and St. Martin (06323/5300).
